Since starting our farm in 2011 we have nurtured our land and grown our food in a sustainable and natural way. Becoming Certified Naturally Grown will help us communicate our growing methods and values to our customers. The peer to peer certification system adds value to the process and certification. CNG also brings us closer together with other like minded producers. Networking and sharing with these other producers will strengthen our our ability to be successful farmers.

Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
All tillage is on a as needed and as limited as possible evaluation. When breaking new ground we have used a small mold board plow or a large disk harrow, contracted from an area farmer. In our field rotation we may use a small disk harrow( 4 foot) to disk in cover crops, prepare areas for bed making or seeding cover crops. We may also use light tillage for bed prep with a walk behind tiller.

We use cover crops to enhance our soil and soil biodiversity by using multi-specie cover crops. Each season and mix is designed to increase available nitrogen, increase biodiversity, decrease soil compaction etc. Our summer cover crops are a diverse mix that can include sunflower, sunn hemp, sorghum sudangrass, radish, turnips, non-gmo soy bean, cow peas, mung beans, alfalfa or more Our winter cover crop can include hairy vetch, winter peas, chick peas, winter oats,cereal rye, triticale or more. If time allows between crops we will grow buckwheat as a cover crop too.
Do you use Compost? *

Currently we only use compost in accordance with rules governing manure. Currently our only use of on farm compost has been for next years asparagus, young fruit trees and possibly prior to planting summer cover crops for an area we are prepping for 2015

In the greenhouse we use Mighty Grow which is composted chicken litter, peat moss,bone meal and cal-lime for our soil mix. We will also be using an OMRI approved (we have not decided which product to use yet)fish and/or kelp meal for plant nutrition In the field also enhance the soil with Mighty Grow and possible bone meal and cal-lime depending on plants needs and soil test results. We might also use a fish/kelp mixture for fertility in the field.

All weed control is done by hand weeding, hoeing, mulching, flame weeding, a walk behind tiller, using our small disk harrow or realizing that "weed" is not actually a problem and letting it grow. We grow over 30 types of vegetables and each situation uses a different method of weed control. In preparing an area for production we will typical use our 4 foot disk arrow. Once raised beds are made with direct seeding just prior to plant growth we might flame weed if needed. Once plants have sprouted and are visible we may hand weed or use a hoe for weeding. If plants are long term plants like tomatoes we will use hoeing and straw mulch as a weed control. Sometimes as needed we may lightly till with a walk behind tiller between rows of vegetables. Between plantings and prior to making beds we will use a small disk harrow.

Our primary systems of insect control are increasing beneficial insect populations, exclusion/covering crops, trap crops, planting around insects heavy season and lastly OMRI approved insecticides. One tactic to increase beneficial insects is that we are increase the amount and frequency of ares within our growing field to beneficial blends of plants that are known to attract beneficial insects. One of the worst pest problems we have is the yellow margin-ed leaf beetle. While devastating it likes leafy greens, mustard, turnips etc and is manageable buy using row cover to exclude this pest. We may also try some trap crops for this pest. We are also going to plant specific varieties of summer squash to attract squash bugs so they hopefully will leave the melons alone. We typically only plant squash as a usable crop early in the season before the squash bugs become a problem. Finally sprays. We do everything we can to avoid using any spray but when we have to it has been and will be OMRI approved. The spray we use the most is Bt to control cabbage worms, cutworms etc. When we have the need to spray Bt it has been done on a 4 to seven day cycle as needed.If worm pressure is low we might not use anything more then picking them by hand. If and when we have needed to use a broad spectrum OMRI approved insecticide we only use it to minimize damage.

Last year we experienced black rot in our brassicas. So we isolated that section from any brassicas, bleached all seed trays, and we do not by seed that has not been tested. Other disease issues are typically dealt with by removing individual infected plants.

We have conventional farms on two sides of our property however there is over 500 feet between those fields and our vegetable growing area.
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
