I have recently purchased 'Jim's Farm', an already certified property and want to continue to operate it as such. I estimate that it will take me the better part of this year to fully develop my business and strategic plan for the property, but there are around 257 blueberry bushes that will be producing this summer and that I want to be able to market.

To clarify the above, the property that I am taking over is certified under Jim McBride, and I do not believe that he has ever been denied certification. He is continuing to live on the property and mentor me as I take things over. I have been familiar with 'Certified Naturally Grown' labeling for years. I am applying for it now so that I can apply to sell produce at the 'Athens Farmer's Market' in Bishop Park. I have served on the board of PLACE (Promoting Local Agriculture and Cultural Experiences), an nonprofit here in Athens, GA and have been involved in local food activism in a variety of other ways as well.

Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
My goal is to work towards a low or no till system, but since Jim has not been producing the past couple of years I intend to sow cover crops and to prepare some raised beds using a tractor.

Clover (red and white) for sure, but I will probably end up using mustard and possibly buckwheat and oats as well. Probably Crimson clover and winter rye, depending on the plot and the season.
Do you use Compost? *

I plan on using primarily on farm compost and local grass clippings, but I may need to purchase some while I am still getting systems set up on the property.

We intend to primarily rely on cover crops and mulching to control weed problems. We mow between the blueberry bushes and manually prune weeds and tree volunteers from around the bases of the plants. The hoop house frame and the area immediately surrounding it is mainly invaded by privet (which needs to be manually pried out), crab grass

Fire ants, beetles that need to be watched for occasionally and that are usually avoided by not pruning the blueberry bushes too close to the surface of the ground. There is also a nocturnal moth that produces caterpillars that do minor defoliation. No sprays or other methods ever used for this minor problem.

The only thing that has been used on the veggies was pepper and Safer Soap solutions. Jim has not been focusing on vegetable production in recent years, though there is irrigation in place and the frame of a hoop house. Right now, however, it is difficult for me to know what kinds of soil and foliar-borne diseases may be present. I am currently developing a crop rotation plan and to build up the overall health of the soil in order to avoid as many issues as possible.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
The north boundary of my property is shared by a CNG certified grower, as is my eastern boundary (farm across the street from me). The western end of my property is all secondary growth forest, and the southern edge is shared with a neighbor who's property is forested as well, and they take care not to use chemicals, promote wildlife on their property, etc.

This year I will be putting most of my effort and resources into preparing the property for production (cover crops, creating a system for compost, identifying a farm manager and/or partner, etc.), but will definitely be marketing the blueberries and hope to be able to plant at least some summer and fall vegetables for sale.
