Founded in 1995, Downtown Greens promotes environmental care by preserving two urban garden areas, using sustainable gardening methods, teaching children through a weekly Garden Club, and raising bees with the Urban Bees program.
New for 2017, we have created a Youth Farm Program consisting of a series of weekly after school meetings in the Downtown Greens upper garden April-October. Children will receive a healthy snack and engage in non-traditional learning and play that includes gardening (weeding, watering, planting, harvesting), nature craft, and environmental literacy. Program leaders will provide a safe environment in which children can develop positive behaviors, leadership skills, gain self-esteem, responsibility, and learn the value of teamwork.
On a monthly basis, the youth will plan and prepare a community meal under the direction of a guest chef. Families and community members will be invited to partake in the meal which will be held in the lower gardens of Downtown Greens. Another regular event will be a monthly field trip to the Downtown Fredericksburg farmer's market to sell extra produce from the youth garden club plot. Through these events Downtown Greens hopes to provide experiences that cultivate community and reinforce life building skills such as leadership, customer service, communication skills, conflict resolution and entrepreneurship.
You can find our produce at the Fredericksburg Farmer's Market on the first Saturday of the month, at select supporting restaurants in Fredericksburg, and in CSA shares available from the Fredericksburg Area CSA Project.
