We believe in the vision being established in the grass roots movement of the Certified Naturally Grown Program. We love the idea of peer based reviews that hold us all accountable to the NOP Standards and other sustainable farming practices. Also, the farmers markets we want to work with require a certification of CNG or USDA OG.

Chick Weed, Thistle, Dandelion, Crab Grass, Johnson Grass. We are applying silage tarps to our bed plots 2 weeks prior to planting to encourage germination but the black tarp prevents the light needed for growth. We then follow the tarp with a flame weeder prior to seeding and flame again right before seedling germination dates. If we are transplanting we will flame prior to planting and use landscape fabric, OMRI certified plastic mulch or interplanting of cover crops for our beds to prevent weed pressure. Hand weeding Crop rotation schedule is also vital in our plan.

Thrips, aphids, moths, flea beetle, grasshopper, potato beetle, cabbage worm, squash bug. We are using AG-19 row cover and insect netting for our production area. Planting of flowers and herbs within the farm plan to attract beneficial and predatory insects. Traps, lures and repellents will be used as well. When all other methods fail we will got to a neem oil and organic/biodegradable soap mixture as a foliar spray. Crop rotation will also play a key role in long term prevention.

Root rot, powdery mildew, leaf spots, drought stress. Removing infected plants and use proper spacing, crop rotation, proper irrigation, purchasing disease free seeds, disease resistant varieties, planting date management, mulching, proper site selection for planting, beneficial fungus introductions.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To the north is a cattle farm about 30 yards from our closest production point. He does not spray and I have talked to him about our production regulations and he is aware and willing to cooperate with us. We also have tree line buffer as well as windscreen fencing. To the east and south is woodlands for 100's of yards. To the west is our home plot and woodlands. We are isolated on a gravel road.
