Please briefly tell us why you are applying to be part of the Certified Naturally Grown program: *
We grow our produce using organic methods that qualify for CNG standards. We would like to be a part of the community of other CNG growers and also be able to explain to potential clients what it means and why we have the certification (provided we are able to acquire it). We believe that if we are serious about our farm business moving foward, CNG is worth being a part of. We also think that for marketing purposes there is a value in the CNG brand that customers trust and believe in because it holds growers to a higher standard. It just seems like a logical step forward.

bermuda grass - hand pulling (total pain but has to be done) crabgrass and johnson grass - cultivation with hand tools and flame weeding broadleaf weeds - cultivation with hand tools, flame weeding use silage tarps for overly weedy areas - they block out sunlight to the weeds and kill them

flea beetle - insect net proteknet hornworm - hand removal while pruning/inspecting cabbage moth - insect net, possibly bt as a last resort, sprayed we use a lot of row covers for insect issues aphids - insect net or pruning out infected areas when inspecting

fungal issues on tomatoes - they are grown in caterpillar tunnels to keep the rain off them and irrigated with drip irrigation. I prune out infected areas as soon as I see them. I sometimes take a leafblower in the tunnel and blow the water off of the foliage. I use the leafblower also on greens and root crops to blow off water that will sit on the foliage a while due to no sun, no wind etc.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
Residential lawn to the east with a driveway and 25' lawn buffer zone that I mow and do not use synthetic fertilizer or weed killer on. The west is our property and is just mowed, not fertilized or any weed seeds. property to the south is 14 acres owned by our neighbor and its pasture and woods that is downhill fro our farm operation. They just mow it and dont use chemical products, we will eventually be raising layers there. the land north is a road and across the road is a vacant house that just gets mowed - no chemical ferts.

I have recently gotten in to farming vegetables (organically) and have been doing so for one year. I also studied Horticulture in college, landscaped for 11 years and did tree work for 3 years. I am an ISA Certified Arborist and still practice Arboriculture part time (I love trees, climbing them and preserving them). I have been working with plants for 14 years amongst constantly learning new things about them all the time. I recently came across regenerative agriculture about 3 years ago and got bit by the bug! My wife and I plan to follow our regenerative/sustainable/organic farming passion for a long time.
