The CNG program appears to provide a more feasible and economical method for very small operations like ours to obtain and maintain certification than other programs such as USDA Organic. We need to be certified to enhance introducing and marketing nutraceutical products from our new crops to prospective customers. They are likely to be particularly health conscious and primarily interested in organic products. Participation in the CNG program will also provide experience with certification issues useful in development of sustainable purchasing systems under development.

Part of our growing area operates as a nursery certified by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Our nursery is also endorsed by Plant Pono, a program intended to reduce introduction and planting of invasive species in Hawaii. We also hold active USDA permits for the import of plants, seeds and protected species. Application will be made in 2019 to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a permit to export plants and products derived from CITES regulated species.

1. Only dry, bagged, granular organic fertilizers, in various commercial formulations are used. Most of these are OMRI registered. These may contain processed manure as ingredients. They are used monthly but usage varies by season and species. 2. Fertilizers are also ingredients in various, bagged, commercial organic potting soils that we use. These may contain processed manure as ingredients. They are used once at planting and repotting time. 3. We do not use fresh or composted manure because it may contain pathogens that could contaminate our products. Its use is prohibited on certified plants by regulations. 4. Diatomite, a bagged, natural mined product, food grade, in various brands is used as a silica source and insecticide. It is added to organic potting mixes, usually at planting or repotting time. 5. Coral rock (as calcium source), bagged, natural mined product. is sometimes added to organic potting mixes at planting or repotting time.

Actual severe weed challenges in container plants grown in Hawaii are primarily from wood sorrel (Oxalis spp.) and spurges (Chamaesyce spp.). that spread by airborne seeds. These are managed by manual removal, use of weed seed free media and weed mats in the largest pots. Herbicides are not used. Likely weed challenges are Christmas berry (Shinus terebinthifolius) and Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus), invasive species that are now the dominant vegetation in our area. These are prevented by use of weed seed free potting soils and manual removal of weed seedlings.

Mealy bugs are severe actual pests of Hoodia and related species grown in greenhouses. They are seldom encountered on plants grown outside, perhaps because there are natural predators present. No methods of control are completely effective for indoor greenhouse control. We use alcohol, insect soaps and neem extracts to treat infestations above the soil and ant control measures outside the certified growing area. Root mealy bug infestations can be reduced to some degree by use of diatomite in planting media, soil drenches with neem extracts, prompt removal of infested plants and strict controls on all incoming materials. We will be exploring the use of hot water soil dips. Development of control measures is part of our research program. Banana moths, false spider mites and spider mites are occasionally encountered and effectively controlled by the methods used for mealy bugs. Nematodes do not appear to infest Hoodia or related species but we are required to comply with all requirements of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) for production of plants in our certified nursery area. Only certified plants can be exported to the states of AZ, CA, LA and TX that have quarantines on Hawaii grown plants because of nematode concerns. HDOA's requirements are comprehensive and include use of nematode-free media, growing on benches, segregation from non-certified plants, disinfection, soil testing and facility inspections. Our moringa trees are rarely affected by pests and we are beginning to develop biopesticides from moringa for control of insect pests. Arabian moringa occasionally has low level infestations of citrus scale and this is controlled by the same methods used for mealy bugs on Hoodia spp.

Bacterial soft rots are very severe diseases of Hoodia and related species. No effective treatments exist. Most of our research over the last 14 years has been on development of cultivars with improved disease resistance. Conventional plant breeding and selection methods were used to develop the cultivars and several now appear to have sufficient resistance to allow them to be grown as organic crops. Anthracnose fungus (Colletotrichum spp.) is a severe disease affecting Hoodia and related species grown outdoors in Hawaii. We have tested all common fungicides (organic and synthetic) and found none to be effective in controlling the disease. Biological pesticides such as biweekly applications of Serenade and neem extracts appear to be somewhat effective in preventing the disease and rots but we are still testing these. The only way we have found to prevent infections is to grow disease free plants in a greenhouse that excludes all rainfall. Controlling this disease is a focus of our ongoing research. Our moringa trees are not affected by diseases. We are developing products derived from moringa for potential use as biopesticides for plant disease control.

For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
Our greenhouse and a small growing area for plants on tables is located in the backyard of a residential lot at the edge of a low density residential development. Lots in our area are typically one quarter to one third of an acre in size. The lots to the north and west of our facility are vacant and covered with dense stands of invasive vegetation. The lot to the south is vacant with mostly weed grass vegetation. Our house is to the East of our greenhouse growing area. Further to the east is a county road and about three miles of untended cattle grazing land and lava flows extending to the Pacific ocean shore. There are no farms in the area. The prevailing trade winds, often strong and steady, are mostly from the ocean (east) toward the growing area. They do not originate from inhabited areas. The growing area is surrounded by lava rock walls of a minimum height of four feet. Most of our plants are grown in a wind resistant, engineered greenhouse with a cement floor, solid clear plastic walls and roof. All plants to be offered as CNG are grown in containers on tables or benches above ground. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture inspects our facility and enforces requirements for separation of certified plants from other plants.

We are a small research company engaged in developing new cultivars of threatened plant species for sustainable cultivation, and novel products to be made from these plants. Moringa from seeds we supplied is now growing as a new crop in several African countries and leaf powder from these trees is helping to save severely malnourished children. Last year we opened an international moringa seed bank. In 2019 we hope to begin small scale production and sales of the first improved varieties of organic Hoodia seeds, plants and products from Hawaii. While our "farm" is tiny our vision of what the future of sustainable agriculture should be extends beyond the horizon.
