I am a beginning lavender farmer and beekeeper and believe that I typically use CNG practices as my best practices already in gardening. I hope to be successful in a sustainable way that will benefit my family, customers, and property.

Will plow and till initially since lavender is a perennial and will only need to do once.

I haven’t used anything yet because lavender doesn’t really require it. I might eventually use some bone meal.
Have any chemical fertilizers been applied to the fields you are seeking Certification for in the last three years (36 months)? *
Have any non-acceptable pesticides and/or herbicides been applied to these fields in the last 3 years? *

Will use DeWitt weed fabric around plants initially and plant grass between rows and mow. Will eventually remove weebarrier. Will jhang weed as needed. Weeds would be a major threat and need to be addressed in early spring and throughout the growing season.

I would be concerned with spittle bugs and aphids. I have a lot of ladybugs in my area, so I hope they would address the issue. I could apply a liquid dish soap if needed.

I am concerned that I could have problems with Phytohera. The best way to prevent it is with good drainage and a reliable plant source — as well as propagating from your own plants. Removal and burning diseased plants is a must. Same goes for Alpha Mosaic Virus. If I have problems with the fungus Rhizoctonia, I could remove plants and treat new plant cuttings with Tichoderma.

I will use water from my well to water plants. They will not be irrigated. Because of the elevation and proximity to a river, fog and dew will also provide moisture and my area receives adequate rainfall.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
We purchased Organic White Clover seeds to plant between lavender rows from High Mowing.
Do you purchase or grow using any Genetically Modified seeds? *
Do you use any chemically treated seeds in your operation? *

How have you confirmed with your supplier that the transplants are grown without synthetic fertilizers or wetting agents? *
Yes with Sage Creations. Awaiting responses and plants from other growers.
Please list any bought-in transplants not grown according to CNG standards. This produce may not be sold as Certified Naturally Grown (except, in the case of perennials, after twelve months of CNG cultivation). *
If the plants from Beagle Ridge and Legacy don’t match the CNG criteria, it won’t be problematic, as I don’t anticipate any sells/ revenue from the plants I am planting in early May. As perennials, the plants would qualify next growing season.
Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:
Is there any likelihood of Chemical/Spray drift contamination of your fields? *
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
My lavender field is near my summer home that is backed by eight acres of woods and yard. Cattle are grazed on the other side but there is no spraying and no potential runoff, as cattle are down slope from lavender and fenced out with a 8 ft.buffer. The lavender field will be fenced. To the north are woods which I own but the cattle on the property can’t access this area. To the east of the field is the area where I plan to establish my “bee lot” and my garden and yard beyond that. To the south is grazing area for cattle that slopes downhill away from the lavender field. To the west is more grazing area and woods (where cattle have no access).

I am starting my Farm this spring. It is my intent to use CNG standards/ practices. Many of the questions were ones I had to respond to based upon plans rather than practice. I will be planting in early May.i have already made a substantial investment in plants and equipment.
