We use organic methods and sell at farmers markets. I dont want to get certified organic but I would like some sort of certification to simplify the brand of our farm. I know a few farms in the area that speak highly about their CNG certification and it sounded like a good fit for our farm

Farmland Management and Practices

We have a few alpacas and pile up the manure during the year. We apply it to the fields in the fall after harvest. It is partially composted when it is applied.

We have a lot of grass infiltration. There is also a bit of pressure from annuals like pigweed and lambs quarter. We use some plastic mulch and are planning to trial a biodegradable mulch this spring. Generally we use hand tools, collinear hoes, stirrup hoes, and wire hoes (the mutineer). We had some success with a small hand tine weeder and plan on purchasing one for this spring that is the width of our planting beds. We do a lot more hand weeding than we should. This year I made an effort to stay more on top of the weeding in hopes of keeping things from going to seed with varying degrees of success, but our weeding program is definitely improving.

Our biggest challenge is flea beetles followed by cabbage beetles and root maggots, all of which we try to address with row covers. We have been a no spray farm thus far so barriers have been our best defence and one that Im very happy with. Im planning on doing more block plantings of things that need row covers and buying larger size agribon, we currently use ten foot wide pieces and it is too time consuming to uncover and cover rows for harvest and weeding. We also have a lot of tomato hornworms which we hand pick unless the wasps have gotten to them first and we hand pick colorado potato beetles off of the potatoes at least in the beginning of the season.

We have a problem with tomato diseases, I havent actually pinpointed which ones we have, but for the most part, our tomatoes are now grown in high tunnels which almost eliminates the issue. We have what I believe is septoria which mainly effects our beets and chard, for the beets, we have switched to only growing the variety Boro for our red beets, which has a decent resistance as well as chiogga which does well against it. As for the chard, I just pull my hair out over it basically, I have no good solution.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *

We only buy some of our flower plugs from outside sources. We grow most of them, but some specialty items such as lisianthus, eucalyptus and others are easier to buy from someone who is better at it than we are. The flowers are grown in a separate fenced in area. We grow them using organic methods, although we dont buy organic flower seed, we dont buy any treated seeds. And that area is a flower only area, no produce is grown there.
How have you confirmed with your supplier that the transplants are grown without synthetic fertilizers or wetting agents? *
Please list any bought-in transplants not grown according to CNG standards. This produce may not be sold as Certified Naturally Grown (except, in the case of perennials, after twelve months of CNG cultivation). *

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To the west is 50 yards of woods, to the south is a home which doesnt use non organic fertilizers and doesnt fertilize their lawns at all. To the north is about 50 yards of woods and then some homes, to the east is a 20 yard buffer and then a baseball field

I realize that my flowers may not be able to be CNG because we purchase a small amount of plugs, since the flowers are grown in a separate area, it wouldnt be a problem to not have them be part of the CNG produce that we grow.
