Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
Initially disk harrow, hill into raised beds and rototill top 2 inches for weed control. Hilled rows are permanent thereafter, only cultivating for weeds and re-hilling as needed. Planting into rolled cover crop and using strip tillage is planned for 2021.

In 2020 we used the following fertilizer: Fertrell feather meal, Fertrell bone meal, Fertrell blood meal, and ALLGANIC Nitrate of Soda. In 2019 and 2018 we used Mason City By-Poducts feather meal and Par-4 bone meal. Since 2018, we have use Tiger-Sul Zinc Oxide 18%, TIGER 90CR Organic Sulphur, Allganic Makro 60 Potassium Chloride and Boron 10%. Prior to 2018, Espoma Plant Tone and Garden Tone fertilizers were used in one 1/4 acre section. Liquid fertilizers (greenhouse use) include Biomin N 5-0-0, Biomin Calcium 5% and Brown's Fish Fertilizer. Dry fertilizers are manually applied to individual rows before planting according to soil test. All potassium, phosphorus and micronutrient needs are applied prior to planting and generally one-third to half of the nitrogen need is applied, followed by a top/side dress of nitrogen at a growth stage as indicated in the Mid-Atlantic Commercial Vegetable Production Recommendations. In the greenhouse, liquid fertilizer is injected into the watering system or applied individually with a pump sprayer. Generally, all plants in our greenhouse are fertilized with liquid nitrogen fertilizer and calcium through injection system.

In 2018, gmo soy beans were grown in the field we use. This was the last time glyphosphate was applied. The field was in a tomato/rye/soy bean/wheat rotation for 20+ years prior.

Multiple weed problems exist but weed pressure has generally been light. Prior to 2019, the field in use was part of a tomato/no-till soy bean rotation. It sat fallow over the winter 2018/2019 (soy bean residue). In spring it was lightly disk harrowed and completely planted with a buffer zone of white clover and various cover crops in six 1/2 acre sections. The cover crops did well to smother any weeds. Raised beds were hilled up as needed. We usually hill about a month before planting to allow weeds to germinate and then run rototiller at about 2" depth before planting. After planting, a cultivator is used as well as manual weeding. Weeds have generally been manageable so far. We plan to use a roller crimper in the future for transplanted vegetables. We practice the same procedure in a smaller 1/4 acre section but with more manual weeding (less tractor access).

Insect pressure was manageable in 2019 and 2020. Allium leaf miner is the newest pest. Other pest include cucumber beetles, Japanese beetles, multiple caterpillar worm pest, squash vine borers, wireworms and flea beetles. Delayed planting can help with leaf miners, but for garlic, in the spring, spinosad is used when scouting indicates a problem and when extension reports indicate allium leaf miner activity. Defense includes multiple beneficial insect strips planted between each of our 1/2 acre sections and one acre in cover crop at any time. A two year rotation consisting of OMRI certified PyGanic, Dipel Pro and Azaguard (Spinsosad if needed in garlic) in year one and Pyganic, Entrust (Spinosad) and Mycotrol in year two has been established. Regular scouting is utilized along with extension reports. Materials are usually applied to target plants by backpack sprayer as needed per label although we are planning to use a three point mounted sprayer for the larger plots. Surround WP has used rather successfully. Mustard cover crop is also used as a bio-fumigant. We plan to establish beetle banks as part of our buffer zone.

The worst disease pressure is in cucurbits and melons. Powdery mildew, downey mildew and phytophthora are all present. A six year rotation (six 1/2 acre sections) was established with two sections in cover crop for an entire year. OxiDate 2.0 and Mildew Cure are used as needed along with a rotation of Milstop and Actinovate in year one and Nu-Cop and RootShield Plus in year two. Early blight in tomatoes is easily taken care of with Oxidate. Phytophthora is a major problem with melons, cucmbers, squash, peppers and tomatoes. Phytophthora resistant pepper varieties have performed well. Melons, cucumbers and pumpkins are the most susceptible. Good drainage and specific placement of transplants help (most susceptible on higher ground, etc). We use drip tape for irrigation to keep plant surfaces dry.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
For 2020 vegetable seeds purchased were all organic except for a few that we could not find organic seed for. We are also using up non-organic seeds that were purchased previously. Cover crop seeds are not organic. Seeds for 2021 are mostly organic (unless not available). We plan to switch cover crop seeds to organic for 2021 if available.

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To the north is a road with a 30' buffer of landino clover with the ground elevation 2 to 5 feet higher than the roadway. Crops are 40' from the roadway edge and 80'from conventional crops (across road). To the east is 40' buffer of landino clover. In 2020, an additional 20' of fallow was left between buffer and conventional potato crop. Drainage from conventional field to the north enters the far edge of the buffer and drains to a waterway on the surrounding conventional field. To the south a 45' buffer of landino clover exist which is located on a crown in the field, draining away to the north and south. To the west is yard (grass, trees), house and small orchard (60' away) on our property. Two hundred feet to the west conventional farming exist.
