We have been growing organically at our farm for three years and are wanting to pursue organic certification but the administrative hurdles are too much to manage this growing season on top of expanding our production.

We purchase soil amendments approved for organic farm use from Seven Springs Farm in Virginia or locally when available: Harmony 5-4-3 Organic Fertilizer, Naturesafe Organic Fertilizer 13-0-0, and occassionally Alfalfa meal or Feather meal. We use agricultural lime from our local feed store each year but based on our soil tests, we have not needed to use rock phosphate or other minerals, just nitrogen and compost.

Strictly cultural controls of weeds: hand tools, mowing, mulching, silage tarps, and flame weeding. Persistent weeds include dock, motherwort, chickweed, purslane, deadnettle, galinstoga, summer broadleaf weeds. We do not do much mechanical cultivation at this point.

We control flea beetles, cabbage moths, and squash bugs with floating row covers, and some biweekly sprays of OMRI-approved spinosad as plants get bigger on the brassicas only. For squash bugs we try to grow resistant varieties and remove crop residues. For pepper weevils we rotate the fields and mow under crop residues. We kill squash bugs and tomato worms.

We try to manage plant disease through cultural controls and soil fertility. We add lots of compost for healthier plants that are less susceptible to disease. We take care to keep water off tomatoes through drip irrigiation, mulches, and overhead tunnels. We try our best to sanitize stakes and row covers and practice good sanitation with seeds, preferring treated organic seeds if available, selecting DMR and PM resistant varieties from reputable vendors, and doing less seed saving. OMRI-approved copper sulfate sprays are applied biweekly to tomatoes when fungal disease is reported in our area, and we are proactive about spraying with compost teas made from comfrey and fish emulsion for plant health.

We dry farm a large field with no irrigation, our intensive market garden irrigation comes from our private well, and our plant starts are watered with City of Hendersonville tap water.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
We order from 5-6 organic seed suppliers (Johnny's, Fedco, Osborne, High Mowing, Southern Exposure) and we purchase organic seed unless it is not available.
Do you purchase or grow using any Genetically Modified seeds? *

We use Dirtcraft Organics Gravity Growers Mix, approved for use in organic agriculture: Coco Coir, Organic Compost, Aged Bark Fines, Perlite, Diatomite, Feather Meal, Bone Meal, Gypsum.
Are all of your transplants grown according to CNG standards, without synthetic fertilizers or wetting agents? *

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To the north of our main wholesale field is a housing development with catchment ponds for runoff and connected to city sewer. To the west there is a wildlife area and marshy wetlands for 300 or so feet. To the west there is a creek about 100 from the planted area, and in the main field we leave that in wildflowers, grasses and cover crop, in the more intensive market field we have planted a riparian buffer of elderberries and river birch. There is a road between the main field and the market field with a 100 foot buffer and drainage on either side of the road.
