We are a family-owned and operated lavender farm. We are proud to use only natural farming practices and organic amendments with out lavender plants, and we would like our community to have the confidence when buying our products that they are chemical-free and produced in a way that is gentle on the environment.

Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
We generally do not till the soil, particularly after the first planting. Where we need to prepare new beds, we will use a mould plow, followed by a light rototill. Thereafter we will utilize a disk harrow.

For initial bed preparation, we will use calcitic lime, hardwood chips and certified organic or NOP products as sources of potassium, phophorous and nitrogen (including worm castings. We currently source these products from a local business named "Organic Approach". The specific products we have used include: Lime, Calcitic (Hi-Cal), Pelletized Natural Mined Calcium Carbonate, 34% Ca 1% Mg-PRO, N-Trust 9-0-4 All-Natural Slow-Release Non-Burning Organic Fertilizer, Calc-Carb CC-12 Micronized Calcium Carbonate Powder, Sequest 10-0-5 Deep-Greening Extended-Release Organic Fertilizer with Soluble Humate, N-Trust 9-0-4 All-Natural Slow-Release Non-Burning Organic Fertilizer, Finesse GVH Granulated Biological Soil Restoration and Coreless Aeration Amendment, Bone Meal Phosphorous - Steamed 2-14-0 + 24% Calcium

We have designed our fields to minimize weeds by using water permeable non-woven row covers for our plants. Between the rows we have planted a combination of organic orchard grass and micro white clover. While some weeds such as crab grass and thistle can grow in the beds, these are pulled by hand. In the rows between beds, weeds are controlled mechanically, by mowing and weed wacking.

Lavender is a natural insect repellant and while we occasionally observe insects they have not to date presented a challenge requiring treatment. In the greenhouse, propagated cuttings may be attacked by white flies and other small insects, we use a combination of glue covered flag materials to capture insects. This has worked well. We also have native preying mantises which help to control insect populations.

Crown rot, pythium and Phytophthora are the greatest threats to Lavender. We address these challenges in a number of ways. First we locate, orient and construct our beds to promote drainage so that the plants are protected from water accumulation around the roots. Second, as a prophylactic, when we propagate our plants and when we plant them, we inoculate the roots with endo-mycorrhizae. We also use and alternate periodically (in two and four week rotations), as a prophylactic, two organic biologic fungicides, Actinovate and Rootshield WP plus. If we encounter an active infection we immediately remove infected plants and the plants on either side, we remove all soil to a depth of 18 inches and apply intense heat using a propane torch to all soil in the infected area from which plants have been removed.

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *

Our plants are perennials, all of the lavender plants on the property (including from Creek Hill Nursery) have been grown according to CNG standards in the 2+ years we have been cultivating.
Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
