We are firm believers that one's health is directly related to the quality and purity of the food and water consumed. Therefore, growing high-quality vegetables is Kendall's Garden's top priority. Instead of our customers taking our word we want a certificate to show we care and want the best for them. After reading and learning more about Certified Naturally Grown we believe it is exactly what we are looking for.

Farmland Management and Practices

At the beginning of the season we till the soil along the contour of the land to reduce erosion.

We purchase compost from a local provider. Compost includes natural material (leaves, bark, etc.)

Some weeds that appear in our field include 1)Henbit 2)Chickweed 3)Hairy Bittercress 4)Crabgrass and various types of grass How we manage these weeds is through hand-pulling and using a hoe. Another way we have dealt with weeds is using mulching for our corn last season. At the beginning of the season we use tractor cultivation.

1)Hornworms on tomatoes 2)Corn Earworms 3)Squash Bugs Neem oil was the only thing we have used on our vegetables. Luckily with the squash bugs last season they appeared at the end of growing our zucchini and yellow squash. Other methods we have used for insect control is daily monitoring of the crops, rotating crops, and planting marigolds and basil.

1)Tomato wilt disease 2)Anthracnose of Tomato 3)Physiological injury (eggplant) We have been fortunate and these diseases were very minimal so no intervention was taken.

We use only well water to irrigate crops. To help minimize water usage and plant disease we use drip irrigation.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
We leverage two major suppliers that offer organic seeds. 1) Johnny's Selected Seeds 2) Burpee
Do you purchase or grow using any Genetically Modified seeds? *
Do you use any chemically treated seeds in your operation? *

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:
Is there any likelihood of Chemical/Spray drift contamination of your fields? *
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To the west, a pond and wooded area of at least 100 yards separate us from the road. To the north, a field of at least 150 yards from a neighbor that does not grow any crops. To the south, of at least 400 yards to the Haw River. To the east, of at least 700 yards to a neighbor that does not grow any crops.
