We are a small hobby farm that practices and preaches organic growing. We cannot be certified organic because of our size in our ag district zoning laws do not consider us a farm. Our market does not have any certified producers and feel that CNG would resonate well with the community and set us apart from others.

Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
One/Low Till on initial ground breaking and then permanent bed type system.

On farm- chicken litter/manure from egg layers, Grass clippings, farm plant/fruit waste, and woodchips.

Biochar created on-farm and mixed in with compost. In the past, used Sustane 4-6-4 and 8-2-4 which is OMRI.

Tarping, permanent beds (no till), cover cropping. Weeds populations have been managed successfully over the past couple of years for low/no weed seed banks.

White Cabbage Moth and slugs are our biggest issues. We use row covers/transplanting healthy plants for natural pest deterence. We also plant companion plants like marigolds and sweet alyssum. Release beneficials on the farm like Preying Mantids. beer traps used for slugs early in teh year while plants are small and low to the ground.

Pythium damage with brassicas and using T-22 trichoderma which manages damping off of transplants. We have other diseases that we promote soil health to create hardy healthy plants. Clean farm and cleaning plant debris mitigates a lot of over wintering diseases. Compost is healthy ands checked for heat/rotated often.

Public water used currently. On farm well was found and will be used this season with rainwater collection system.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
I work at High Mowing and only use organic seed unless a variety we need to grow isnt certified, and then we use untreated seed. We also source from Fruition, and Osborne seed.
Do you purchase or grow using any Genetically Modified seeds? *
Do you use any chemically treated seeds in your operation? *
Do you grow your own transplants? *
Do you purchase potting soil, or do you mix your own on the farm? *
Pro Mix Organix OMRI approved.
What ingredients does your potting mix contain? If you purchase a mix, please also indicate which product. *
well balanced organic Potting mix (above), vermiculite, and perlite.
Are all of your transplants grown according to CNG standards, without synthetic fertilizers or wetting agents? *

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
We grow in our side yard. No one in our area sprays chemicals (unannounced to us), but there is GMO fields around us with a 22 acre riperian buffer in between. Never had any chemical damage growing over the past 4 years.
