I am applying to be part of this program for a number of reasons, including: my commitment to grow native flowers and pollinator plants, my desire to participate in the community and share ideas, practices, and resources, and my intent to demonstrate to my son the importance of sustainable, natural growing practices. I am so excited to connect with you all and the other CNG farmers in my area.

I also plan to sell to the local community through a mobile flower truck. This portion of the business is called Pop-Up Petals. I am currently working with USDA to identify regional wholesalers and may market to them as well.

Farmland Management and Practices

I am in the process of working with my farming mentor, Brent Lopp, to prepare the land for the first cover crops. I will be planting legumes along with a broadleaves, such as sunn hemp and sunflowers.

My primary weed problem is bamboo. It is being controlled by mechanic means (mulcher) while being mindful of leaving as much topsoil intact as possible.
Describe your primary insect challenges AND methods of control. Do not answer "none". You MUST indicate either actual pest challenges and/or LIKELY challenges, and you must ALSO indicate how you manage (or would manage) them. If you indicate a product, also specify how often it's used. *
It is unclear at this point what the primary insect challenges will be, as this is the first growing season on this land. Regardless of the specific challenge, I will be using only organic-based pesticides, in the least amounts possible in accordance with proper integrated pest management practices.

Again, it is unclear what the primary disease challenges will be, but should any arise, I would modify my farming practices to avoid prolification of the specific disease.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
All four sides of my property are buffered by forest/trees. There is nothing being grown within 150 feet of any of the edges of the farming area.

Although this is my first growing season on this piece of land, I do have experience with organic growing. Additionally, I am working in tandem with Brent Lopp as my mentor, who has many years of larger-scale organic farmer in my area of Athens, GA.
