Please briefly tell us why you are applying to be part of the Certified Naturally Grown program: *
For the past year, we have been transitioning our orchard into a more ecological management system. We are taking out all synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, working on building the soil fertility and accompanying soil biology, assessing plant health with sap analysis and only adding inputs that are non-synthetic. Next year, we plan to also add an apiary and want it to be certified under CNG. We believe that a successful agricultural enterprise is one that is ecologically-minded and regenerative.

Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
We do not till the ground in our orchard and alley system. We use a no-till seeder to establish new plantings. For our annual feed plots, we sometimes lightly disc the top before seeding.

We used a mixture of perennial Aberlasting White Clover, Bruce's Birdsfoot Trefoil, Chicory, Tonic Plantain, Small Burnet, Yellow Sweet Clover, various grasses including fescue mixes and wheatgrass.

We purchase complete, aged compost that has been properly composted according to USDA standards. The compost comes from organic sources and includes wood chips, organic bean stubble, aspen sawdust, rye straw bales and anti-biotic free chicken manure.

We only apply manure in the orchard rows at 2-3 tons/acre.

I have listed an extensive source of products that we use for our trees. However for the pasture areas, we only apply compost extract from our purchased compost.

We have low weed pressure due to our dry climate. However, native grasses and Forbes do germinate. Our plan to manage them is to continue to change build the soil structure and organic matter content until we find the niche for the legumes and grasses that we want to grow. As mentioned in our produce application, we do spray an organic herbicide in the tree rows which is called Suppress.

As mentioned in our produce application, we do have some pest pressure in our trees. However, we have not experienced any problems with our pastures. If we experience future problems with them, we will treat them in the same we do with our tree system by creating an IPM protocol that would involve compost extract and teas, and building habitat for beneficial insects.

Currently, we do not experience any disease pressures in our pastures/alleyways. However, disease pressure will more than likely come from nutrient deficiency as it relates to our sodic soils. For this reason, our management of pastures focuses on having proper nutrient cycling, building soil microbes, and provide foliar sprays of compost extract and teas.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
We do our best to purchase organic seeds for our chicken feed lot (corn and sunflower) as well as our cover crops. Many cover crops are not organic, but we check multiple sources before we make a decision.
Do you purchase or grow using any Genetically Modified seeds? *

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:
Is there any likelihood of Chemical/Spray drift contamination of your fields? *
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
Our orchard is in an isolated canyon between Delta, CO and Grand Junction, CO. To the south of us along the Gunnison river is wild, uncultivated land. Farther south, a neighbor grows alfalfa, but the field is on the other side of a hill and at least two miles away. To the north of us, is another orchard that is not organic. They are three miles away. To the west and east of our orchard is nothing but wild canyon land. A dirt road provides access to the orchard.

I have filled out this application based on our current production of pears, cherries, and peaches. However, we plan to install an apiary next year and hope to expand a greenhouse operation for other berries such as strawberries.
