Applicant Details

Please briefly tell us why you are applying to be part of the Certified Naturally Grown program: *
We have been certified organic through pro-cert for the past 10+ years as Kind Organics Inc. We grew and sold about 40 blends of hydro sprouts, microgreens, baby greens and salad blends. We were spending way too much time on our organic certification processes. We were actively in 40+ stores and 6 year-round farmers markets in Toronto. We employed over a dozen people year round and worked 7 days a week. It all became too complicated, staffing issues became unbearable and our health began to suffer. After 2 years of retirement from farming we re-envisioned Kind Organics, we are keeping it small and simple and don't want a lot of paperwork or employees. We will be selling primarily from our farm and possibly a handful of stores and one farmers market. We are relaunching our farm now for 2022 production. (crops are in the ground!)
Are you currently third party Certified for your produce operation by any other organization (Organic, Biodynamic, etc)? *

If yes, please note which agencies and dates: *

no
How did you hear about Certified Naturally Grown? *
internet
How did you learn to farm, and for how long have you been farming for market? What has prepared you to farm successfully according to CNG standards? *
3rd generation European farmer. Been farming in Canada bio-dynamically since 2000. We were Bio Dynamic Demeter certified from 1999-2001 and Procert Organic Certified from 2009-2020. I learned from my dad, I took workshops through Guelph U and FarmStart, I apprenticed at Cookstown Greens (briefly) and at a friends organic farm when I was young. (You can check out our previous operational capacity through Instagram and Facebook as well as take a tour of our previous operation on YouTube by searching for Curtis Stone Kind Organics (he came to visit and did 2 videos on us). Let me know if you want me to send you a bunch of links...there is a lot of video and photo evidence of our growing abilities...I have also taught workshops, we hosted wwoofers, had an internship program for local and overseas students from several colleges, we trained 100's of volunteers, woofers and interns.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
We buy microgreen seeds certified organic from MUMMS Sprouting seeds in saskatchewan. We buy vegetable seeds locally from William Dam seeds (they do not sell ANY treated seeds). We make efforts to buy certified organic seed when available (which is almost all the time), occasionally we buy non treated seeds when organic not available or too cost prohibitive BUT certifed organic for our microgreens all the time.
Do you purchase or grow using any Genetically Modified seeds? *

Do you use any chemically treated seeds in your operation? *

Do you grow your own transplants? *

Do you purchase potting soil, or do you mix your own on the farm? *
Both.
What ingredients does your potting mix contain? What ingredients does your potting mix contain? If you purchase a mix, please also indicate which product. *
We buy Fafard peat (organic, no wetting agents) we buy Berger OM6 peat based soiless mix for starting our seedlings and mix it with our compost and 8-4-4 sustain slow release fertilizer.
Are all of your transplants grown according to CNG standards, without synthetic fertilizers or wetting agents? *
yes
If any transplants are not grown according to CNG standards, please list them here. (If they all are, put "N/A".) This produce may not be marketed as Certified Naturally Grown. *
n/a
Do you purchase any transplants from outside sources? *
no
Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:
Is there any likelihood of Chemical/Spray drift contamination of your fields? *
no
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
yes
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
North- We have one residential neighbor to the north, there is a 20metre buffer of fence and we are planting trees there also. South- is a 7 acre hillside into a valley that is conservation land operated by the Toronto District School Board. East- large cottage with 50 acres of grass and trees, we have a fence line, will be planting trees, not growing in that area at all! West- To the west is the road with a tree line.

Agreements

Please indicate your agreement with the following statements by checking the boxes.
I will not label, or in any way lead consumers to believe that produce not raised in accord with CNG standards is Certified Naturally GrownTM. *
I understand that I have to complete at least one (and hopefully more) Certification Inspection(s) of another farm in my area each year, and that the inspection will NOT be of the same farmer that inspected me. *
I have reviewed the Certified Naturally Grown certification standards, I understand them, and I will abide by them. I understand that if I have any questions I may contact CNG for clarification. *
